Matoke

Ingredients
  
  • 4 matoke (green bananas), unpeeled
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Dried chillies (as many as you prefer)
  •  ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water


  • Directions:
    • Wash the bananas thoroughly and place them unpeeled in a cooking pot, cover with some water then bring to a boil for 20 mins.
    • Peel them, then slice to pieces or chunks. Heat a deep pan. Once hot, toast the cumin seeds – ensure that they do not burn.
    • Add oil, chopped onions and cook until slightly browned. Add a few chillies and the turmeric and fry over low heat for about five minutes.
    • Add the chopped bananas, stir, then add a cup of water (add more water if bananas are not soft enough) then allow to cook until the bananas are soft.
    • Serve with some chapati.
